Holyoke was among the first planned industrial communities in the country. During its early years, the city was home to over 25 paper mills, hence the nickname “The Paper City”. Among the major employers in the city is the Holyoke Mall, one of the largest shopping malls in the New England area.
Historically, Holyoke was a city of working class immigrants, mostly of Irish origins. Today, the city is home to the second largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the country, next to the New York City parade. The parade in Holyoke draws hundreds of thousands of people from all over the country.
